Seven Steps To Happiness?

It is such an abstract thing isn’t it? Happiness? When I sat down to describe happiness I ended up with saying “It is something that makes you happy”, that didn’t exactly define happiness correctly right? Then I started telling about things that makes me happy which made me realize what makes me happy doesn’t necessarily make others happy as well. Happiness is subjective, that’s one thing I learnt from it. Is happiness getting what you want or is that being selfish? Maybe I am going to be forever at loss for words to describe Happiness.

I turned to Google to find out what the intelligent minds think of Happiness.
“For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness.”
                 ―
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hmm.. That makes sense but who are we kidding? When we are angry all you can think about is how to deal with the situation at hand. We are far from being sane enough to think of this quote.
“Seven Deadly Sins

Wealth without work
Pleasure without conscience
Science without humanity
Knowledge without character
Politics without principle
Commerce without morality
Worship without sacrifice.”

Mahatma Gandhi

Wise man with his wise words! This is so very accurate. What is wealth if it is not your hard earned money? What is wealth if it comes from the poor? What is wealth if it is not ethical? I don’t want to point fingers but wouldn’t it be nice if the people in power actually understand this?

Pleasure without conscience, talk about all the wrong doing happening in the society these days. We have reached a stage where if a stranger is being nice to you, you immediately start doubting that stranger and try to find the hidden agenda.  We are getting cynical as the day pass.

I like technology, I don’t feel complete if I don’t have my phone in my hand, the house looks empty if my laptop is not on and somehow most of the conversation happens via technology. Although it is all fun and entertainment and convenience the thought of artificial intelligence terrifies me. A Robot who can actually pass as a Human? I mean how anyone can be at peace with that information. At a recent seminar that I attended, a panelist pointed out that back in 2000 when we had simple Nokia Phones which were used just to make calls it would have been difficult to imagine that by 2015 we would have the entire world on our phones. We always knew that type of technology was on its way but didn’t know that it was so close to reality. Taking the same thought forward he asked if we could tell what kind of technology we would be dealing with in 2080, we all were stumped!

Knowledge without character - We have educated men raping girls, we have well to do families asking for dowry, what more could I say.

If we really avoid the above seven sins that Gandhi mentioned, do you think we would indeed be happy?
